MS excel formula – NOW and TODAY

The TODAY function gives you the current date, while the NOW function gives you the current date and time. Although the NOW function technically returns the current date and time, you can format it as just the time, as shown below:

The distinction between TODAY and NOW is that the latter just provides the date value, which is kept in the internal Excel system as a whole number. The date and time value, which includes an integer for the date and a fractional number for the time, are returned by NOW.

Formula:

=TODAY()  = 3/27/2024

=NOW() =

Formula:

=TODAY()  = 3/27/2024

=NOW() =

3/27/2024 0:35

Keep in mind that these are volatile functions that recalculate whenever a worksheet is modified. Date and time shortcuts can be used to obtain a static value.

1. DATE SHORTCUT: This shortcut will add the current date as an unchanging, fixed value.

2. TIME SHORCUT: This shortcut will add the current time as an unchanging fixed value.

When you want a worksheet to always show the current date, no matter when you access it, the TODAY function comes in handy. Interval calculations can also be made with it. To determine someone’s age as of this year’s birthday, for instance, you may apply the formula below if you know that person was born in 1963:

= YEAR( today())-1963

This formula returns the person’s age by subtracting 1963 from the current year, which is obtained by using the TODAY function as an argument for the YEAR function.
